Beat the UAE Summer Heat: A Facility Manager's Guide to Insulating Roof Lights

Every UAE summer asks the same question of industrial roof lights. Is it working for the building or against it. Most facility managers never get a clear answer, just a rising electricity bill and a maintenance team mentioning the warehouse feels worse this year than last.

The 45°C problem

A non insulating roof light does not stop summer heat. It absorbs it and passes it straight through to whatever sits underneath, whether that is stock, machinery, staff, or a cold storage room already working harder than it should. That heat load lands on your air conditioning system. Compressors run longer and they wear out faster for it.

U values without the jargonThe number that predicts how a roof light behaves in summer is the U value, measured in watts per square metre per kelvin. It tells you how much heat moves through a square metre of roof light for every degree of difference between outside and inside. Lower is better. A high U value roof light lets heat through freely. A low U value roof light slows it down and keeps conditions inside more stable. A typical non insulating roof light sits at the high end of that scale. Multi layer GRP rooflight panels sit at the low end, and that gap is where the electricity savings actually come from.

The numbers

Double Skin GRP panels bring the U value down to 1.3 W/m²K at 100mm thickness. Triple Skin panels, with a thermal barrier layer built between the top and liner sheets, take it further to 1.0 W/m²K. Our site assembled kits, built for contractors who prefer bulk delivery and on site assembly, get as low as 0.9 W/m²K at the same thickness, among the lowest U values available in a locally made GRP system.

Solar heat gain coefficient follows the same pattern. Triple Skin panels bring that figure down to 0.32, so less of the sun's radiant energy makes it through to begin with, not just less heat once it does.Every panel is manufactured to ASTM D3841 and backed by our ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system, with UKAS and SGS certification behind the materials. The daylight bonus most people forget to budget

Insulation is only half of what a GRP rooflight does for an energy bill. The same panel slowing down heat transfer is also letting natural daylight into the building, which means fewer hours running interior lighting during the working day. For warehouses and production floors on long shifts, that daylighting effect adds to the insulation savings rather than sitting separately from them. It is one of the few upgrades that touches two line items on the same utility bill.

As a general rule, replacement makes more sense than repair once your roof lights show several signs of wear at once, yellowing, leaks, cracking, or a cooling bill that keeps climbing, rather than one isolated fault.
